A company or organization that prepares and publishes books and other documents. Various stages of work may be performed by them, including printing, but their aim is to organize and manage the entire process of creation and distribution of books.

Sometimes the publisher is fallaciously given the name of the organization that only prints the book. In fact, the publisher is responsible for the broader process, including editorial, marketing, distribution and other stages.
