Footers settings
What is the footer?
The footer in printed publications is a special design element that is placed at the top or at the bottom of the page. It is commonly used to provide important information that should be easily accessible while reading a book or a document. The top of page header, which is placed at the beginning of the page, often includes the book headings or chapter title and the author's name. The footer, which is placed at the bottom of the page, usually contains page numbers to help the reader navigate through the document. The footers serve several purposes. First of all, they help to improve navigation through the book, making the reading process more convenient and organized. Secondly, they provide useful information without any distraction from the main text. Finally, they add aesthetic value to the page design, making it more attractive and professionally formed.
The use of footers is a common practice in many types of printed materials, such as books, magazines, scientific papers and business documents. They provide not only functionality but also contribute to the overall aesthetics and appearance of the printed publication.
Where may a footer be placed?
The footers of print publications can be placed differently on the page, depending on the design and structure of the book. Here are the main options for their position:
- The top of page header: Located at the top of the page. Often contains the book heading, chapter or section title, and/or volume numbers. In some cases, it may also include the author's name.
- Footer: Located at the bottom of the page. Usually contains page numbers. In some books, additional notes or brief references may also be placed here.
- Side footer: Although this is a less traditional variant, footers are sometimes placed in the side margins of the page, especially in books with non-standard designs.
The choice of footer position depends on several factors:
Aesthetics and publication design: In some books, especially in art or design ones, the choice of footer location may be driven by the overall design concept.
Functionality: In academic and scholarly texts, the top of page header is often used to simplify navigation through the text.
Genre or series traditions: Some genres or series of books may follow certain traditions in footer design.
It is important for footers to be placed consistently throughout the publication and to be easy to read without cluttering the page or distracting attention from the main text.
Changing the position of the footers
To change the position of the footers, you ought to move to the "Footers" tab, which follows the "Fields" section in the design process.
You can set the position of the footer and page numbering in the settings in a separate way, so that you can place these elements in different parts of the page. However, if you want the footer and page numbers to be in the same place, just select the same positions for them.
By default, the footers include the author's name and book heading, but you can change it by entering your own text in the fields provided. However, keep in mind that the maximum length of the text in the footer is limited and depends on the width of your publication. It is desirable not to exceed 70-80 characters of the text for the footers.
Changing the footer style
To change the style of the footer, you ought to click on the gear sign to the right of and select the appropriate design style. Please note that if you match the footer and page numbering within the same margin, the layout can adapt independently so that both entities are harmoniously placed with each other.
